Troubleshoot a Mac that powers on but does not display the login window or desktop.

Difficulty: AdvancedTypical time: 30-90 minutes

Symptoms you may notice

  • The feature or device does not behave as expected.
  • The issue returns after retrying the same action.
  • You may see an error message, warning, delay, or missing response related to this problem.

Before you begin

Important: Save open work before restarting the computer or device. If a step changes accounts, storage, security, or network settings, make a note of the original setting so you can restore it if needed.
  • Connect the device to reliable power if battery level is low.
  • Save open documents and close any application that contains unsaved work.
  • Write down the exact error message or take a screenshot before changing settings.

Step-by-step troubleshooting

1

Increase brightness and check external displays

Raise display brightness and disconnect docks, adapters, and extra monitors. If using an external display, verify its input source and cable.

What you should see: The startup image should appear on the primary display.

2

Force a clean restart

Hold the power button until the Mac turns off, wait 10 seconds, then turn it on again with only power connected.

What you should see: The Apple logo and progress bar should appear.

3

Start in Safe Mode on Apple silicon

Shut down, hold the power button until startup options load, select the startup disk, hold Shift, and choose Continue in Safe Mode.

What you should see: The login screen should indicate Safe Boot.

4

Start in Safe Mode on Intel

Restart while holding Shift until the login window appears. Sign in; you may be asked to sign in twice.

What you should see: Safe Boot should load using minimal extensions and caches.

5

Use macOS Recovery

If Safe Mode does not load, start macOS Recovery using the method for your Mac and open Disk Utility. Run First Aid on the startup volume without erasing it.

What you should see: First Aid should finish without an unrepairable disk error.

6

Reinstall macOS without erasing data if needed

From Recovery, choose Reinstall macOS only after confirming the startup disk is visible and you have an appropriate backup. A standard reinstall is intended to preserve user data but backup remains important.

What you should see: macOS should reinstall system files and return to the login screen.

Confirm the problem is resolved

  1. Repeat the action that originally failed and confirm it now completes normally.
  2. Restart the affected application or device once more and verify the fix remains in place.
  3. Confirm that no new warning or error message appears during normal use.

If the problem continues

If none of the steps resolve the problem, stop making additional changes and contact technical support. Provide the exact error text, screenshots if available, the device model, operating-system version, and a list of the steps already completed.

Helpful information to record: the exact error message, when the problem started, what changed immediately before it started, the device model, operating-system version, and which steps above were already attempted.
