Troubleshoot SMS, MMS, RCS, or iMessage messaging failures while preserving account and conversation data.
Symptoms you may notice
- The feature or device does not behave as expected.
- The issue returns after retrying the same action.
- You may see an error message, warning, delay, or missing response related to this problem.
Before you begin
- Connect the device to reliable power if battery level is low.
- Save open documents and close any application that contains unsaved work.
- Write down the exact error message or take a screenshot before changing settings.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
Identify the message type
Determine whether the failure affects SMS/MMS, RCS, or iMessage. Note message color/status and whether the problem occurs with one contact or everyone.
What you should see: You should know which messaging service is failing.
Check cellular and internet connectivity
SMS generally needs cellular service; iMessage/RCS may need data. Verify signal and internet access, then toggle Airplane mode for 10 seconds.
What you should see: The phone should reconnect to required networks.
Restart the messaging app and phone
Close the messaging app, restart the phone, and try a short test message.
What you should see: A temporary messaging process issue should clear.
Verify the contact details
Open the recipient contact and confirm the phone number or Apple/account address is correct and not accidentally blocked.
What you should see: Messages should be addressed to the intended endpoint.
Check service settings
On iPhone review Settings > Apps > Messages for iMessage and Send as SMS as appropriate. On Android review Google Messages or manufacturer messaging settings for RCS/chat status.
What you should see: The intended messaging service should show active or connected.
Contact the carrier for persistent SMS/MMS failure
If ordinary carrier text messages fail to all recipients despite good signal, ask the carrier to verify messaging provisioning. Avoid changing message-center or APN values without provider instructions.
What you should see: Carrier-side messaging service should be confirmed.
Confirm the problem is resolved
- Repeat the action that originally failed and confirm it now completes normally.
- Restart the affected application or device once more and verify the fix remains in place.
- Confirm that no new warning or error message appears during normal use.
If the problem continues
If none of the steps resolve the problem, stop making additional changes and contact technical support. Provide the exact error text, screenshots if available, the device model, operating-system version, and a list of the steps already completed.
